Why she started rowing:

I promised myself to be in shape for my 40th birthday, plus they just added Masters Women to the San Diego Crew Classic, a huge spring regatta there.

Why she rows now:

I love the people, the beauty of sunrises and sunsets, the quest for the perfect stroke, the very special team blending and mutual support, keeping in shape, and the travel together to regattas near and far.

Goals:

My priority race is the single at the Head of the Charles in Boston in October. Otherwise, I’m training now for a 500m quad dash at SDCC at the end of March. My main summer goal is to try to keep up with the Masters of Megunticook!

Most unexpected thing she's learned:

How welcoming rowers are all over the world, and how fun it is to join them on their own water.

What she does off the water:

First I was in oceanography, then immunology, then helped my husband run a small corporation manufacturing ultrasonic equipment for cardiology and physiology research. Nowadays I love being with my grandkids in and around Belfast, Maine.

Advice for new rowers:

Just do it! Bring a friend to share trials, tribulations and triumphs. Or make new friends, while you learn about rowing and yourself.

Closing thoughts:

The learning curve is steep at first, then lasts the rest of your life. Rowing is a metaphor for life: don’t worry about the last stroke, focus on the one you’re on now, ‘cause that’s the one you can fix. Oh, and never worry about where you sit in the boat! The only bad seat is on shore.
